Came across a very interesting website today, its by a group called the Music Genome Project and the URL is http://www.pandora.com/. The only thing it requires is that Flash be installed on your machine. The first 10hrs of usage is free, so theres no reason not to check it out. How it works is you input a song or band that you like, and based on their entries in their database they then play songs that have similar musical qualities. Its very easy to use and for the most part does a pretty good job at finding similar music.

As an example, I put in the band Demons & Wizards, it then played the song 'Crimson King' as a sample of Demons & Wizards' music with this description; "Features hard rock roots, mild rythmic syncopation, minor key tonality, demanding instrumental part writing and mixed acoustic and electric instrumentation" it then went on to play 'Judas Rising' by Judas Priest with this description; "features mild rythmic syncopation, minor key tonality, demanding instrumental part writing, mixed acoustic and electric instrumentation and prominent drums"
